Abstract (eng):The amount of impervious surfaces has increased along with urbanization.
The impervious cover impacts on the natural water cycle by decreasing infiltration and increasing surface flows.
The objective of this thesis was to evaluate the impacts of different stormwater management methods on runoff induced by heavy rainfall in a dense urban environment.
The study area was located in Vallikallio in Espoo.

The hydrology of the study area was modelled with rainfall-runoff model SWMM (Storm Water Management Model).
The measured rainfall and stormwater sewer runoff data from years 2004-2006 was utilized in the modelling.
The model for simulations was constructed with QGIS, which was used to define the catchment boarders and land use.
The SWMM model was calibrated and validated against the measured stormwater runoff data using PEST (Model Independent Parameter Estimation).
The LID (low impact development) tools of SWMM were used to model the stormwater management methods.
Literature was used to find suitable parameters and sizing for the LID practices.
Scenarios from stormwater management methods were formed and modelled to show the impact of different LID practices on the stormwater sewer runoff.
Literature and interviews of interest groups were used to form the scenarios.
The objective of the interviews was to get a practical perspective into the study and to review the current situation of stormwater management in Finland.
The objective to analyze LID practices when the soil hydraulic conductivity was good (sandy loam) and poor (clay loam) was formed based on the interviews.
Furthermore, the interviews established the objective for comparison of different sizing criteria of LID practices.

The stormwater management scenarios were compared by using event scale modelling of design storms of different magnitudes and continuous modelling of longterm time series.
The comparisons were made based on the differences in peak flows and runoff volumes.
The modelled single events included 10-minute design rainfall intensities rep-resenting the recurrence intervals of 1, 5 and 100 years.
The modelled longer periods were rainy period from April to October in 2004 and dry period from April to August in 2006.
The impacts of LID practices during single rainfall events was visible especially in the reduction of the peak discharge in the stormwater sewer.
The longer periods showed the impacts of LID practices on the cumulative runoff volume reduction.

The greatest effects during long period simulations with good hydraulic conductivity of soil were discovered using combinations of LID practices.
The combinations included bioretention, rain barrels and permeable pavements at street area.
When the hydraulic conductivity of soil was poor the largest effect was discovered with wide-ranging green roof scenario.
The effects of other scenarios on sewer runoff were small.
The single rainfall events were modelled with good hydraulic conductivity of soil.
The greatest impact was again discovered with combinations of the LID practices.
The LID practices had only a small effect on sewer runoff during the largest single rainfall events and the differences between the practices were small.
Abstract (fin):Vettä läpäisemättömän pinnan määrä on lisääntynyt kaupungistumisen myötä.
Läpäisemätön pinta vaikuttaa veden luonnolliseen kiertokulkuun vähentämällä imeytymistä ja haihduntaa ja lisäämällä pintavaluntaa.
Tämän työn tavoitteena oli arvioida erilaisten hulevesien hallintarakenteiden vaikutuksia rankkasadetapahtumien aiheuttamaan valuntaan tiiviisti rakennetussa kaupunkiympäristössä.
Tutkimusalueena työssä oli Vallikallion alue Espoossa.

Alueen hydrologiaa mallinnettiin SWMM (Storm Water Management Model) sadanta-valuntamallilla.
Mallinnuksessa hyödynnettiin alueelta kerättyä sadanta- ja hulevesiviemärin valuntamittausaineistoa vuosilta 2004-2006.
Mallin muodostamisessa käytettiin apuna QGIS-ohjelmaa, jolla määritettiin valuma-alueen rajat sekä maankäyttö.
SWMM-malli kalibroitiin ja validoitiin hulevesiviemärissä mitattua valuntaa vastaan käyttäen PEST-ohjelmaa (Model Independent Parameter Estimation).
Työssä käytettiin SWMM-ohjelman laskennallisia kuvauksia hulevesien hallintarakenteille eli LID-rakenteille (Low Impact Development).
LID-rakenteille etsittiin sopiva parametrisointi ja mitoitus kirjallisuuden ja sidosryhmähaastatteluiden avulla.

Hulevesien hallintarakenteista muodostettiin skenaarioita, joita mallintamalla osoitettiin eri LID-rakenteiden vaikutuksia hulevesiviemärin valuntaan.
Skenaarioiden muodostamisessa käytettiin apuna kirjallisuutta ja sidosryhmähaastatteluita.
Sidosryhmähaastatteluiden kautta tavoitteena oli saada työhön käytännön näkökulmia ja kartoittaa hulevesien hallinnan nykytila Suomessa.
Haastatteluissa työn tavoitteeksi tarkentui hallintarakenteiden toimivuuden tarkastelu hyvin ja huonosti vettä läpäisevissä maaperissä erilaisilla mitoitustilavuuksilla.Hulevesien hallintaskenaarioita vertailtiin keskenään erikokoisilla sadetapahtumilla sekä pidemmillä ajanjaksoilla.
Vertailu perustui eroihin hulevesiviemärin ylivirtaamissa ja valunnan kokonaismäärässä.
Mallinnetuiksi yksittäisiksi sadetapahtumiksi valittiin kerran vuodessa, viidessä vuodessa ja sadassa vuodessa toistuvat 10 minuutin rankka-sadetapahtumat.
Mallinnetut pitkät ajanjaksot olivat vuoden 2004 sateinen jakso huhtikuusta lokakuuhun ja vuoden 2006 kuiva ajanjakso huhtikuusta elokuuhun.
LID-rakenteiden vaikutus näkyi lyhyillä mitoitussateilla erityisesti viemäriverkoston ylivirtaamien pienentymisenä.
Pitkillä ajanjaksoilla puolestaan pystyttiin osoittamaan LID-rakenteiden aiheuttama kumulatiivisen hulevesivalunnan vähentyminen.

Suurimmat laskennalliset pitkän ajan vaikutukset saatiin hyvin läpäisevällä maaperällä usean menetelmän yhdistelmillä, joissa oli mukana biosuodatusalueet, sadevesisäiliöt ja katualueiden läpäisevät päällysteet.
Huonosti läpäisevällä maaperällä suurimmat pitkän ajan vaikutukset saatiin laaja-alaisesti toteutetulla viherkattoskenaariolla.
Muiden menetelmien vaikutukset kumulatiiviseen valuntaan olivat heikkoja.
