Abstract (eng):The aim of the study is to reduce the lead-time of an engineering workshop with a high-mix make-to-order production by improving the methods and tools used in production control and planning.
A simulation model of the factory was created to research the effect of changing the values of specific parameters used in production planning.

In the theoretical section of this thesis, the most significant concepts concerning production control, and the IT-systems used in planning and controlling the production are introduced.
Additionally, the basics of Lean are explained and some Lean tools aiming to reduce the lead-time are familiarised.
Lastly, the basic concepts of mathematical modelling and simulation methods are presented, as well as the issues needed to be taken into consideration when creating a model are looked into.
In the empirical section of the thesis the focus is on the creation process of the simulation model and its functions.

The primary aim of the thesis was to research the effect of changing the values of the production buffer times with the help of the simulation model.
The results of the simulation model runs show that the used simulation program is not suitable for this type of problem to be simulated.
However, by inspecting the buffer times and their relations to the production times on different machines of the factory it was found out that the buffer times on specific machines could be decreased in order to achieve shorter lead-times.
Decreasing the buffer times, however, necessitates a more accurate scheduling information and more control over the planning state.
This is achieved by the use of an advanced planning and scheduling system.
During the process of this thesis three different planning and scheduling systems with their functions were familiarised.
Of these three systems two are suitable for the needs of the company and negotiations should be continued.
Furthermore, with the help of the simulation model and the examples mentioned in literature it became clear that by implementing specific Lean tools it is possible to reduce the lead-time substantially.
