| Tiivistelmä: | After a period of weak growth, exacerbated by fiscal tightening to meet the Maastricht criteria, Europe is on the verge of economic recovery as low interest rates, currency depreciation and an end to destocking boost output. Slow EU economic activity in 1996 was a consequence of currency appreciation in 1995, which began with the Deutschmark. It resulted in weaker EU export growth and, in consequence, declining manufacturing output, an involuntary rise in stockbuilding in 1995 that had to be reduced in 1996, and subdued growth in investment spending. |
