Tiivistelmä:In the United States (U.S.), economic progress has been attributed to the successful combination of two social structures: 1. capitalism as an economic system, and 2. democracy as a political one. This article explores the evolution of work ethic in the U.S. and the returns experienced through various adaptations in the country's history, as well. Based on that, the information is structured into a proposal that key messages included in the current, accepted work ethic are subject to distortions, possibly contributing to unethical decision making. These distortions result from two potentials: 1. efforts to match the work ethic with contradictory messages, and 2. overstatements of the work ethic that become dysfunctional. It is aimed at providing a framework possibly explaining to organizational leaders how people with the same basic work ethic can behave differently in terms of ethical work.
