Abstract (eng): | The energy branch has experienced major changes during the past decade. Operating in today's deregulated and competitive power generation market forces the power producers to rethink their plant's operating processes and focus on maintaining competitiveness. Rationalisation of the operations can only bring limited benefits and some companies now find themselves in a situation where entirely new ways of operation have to be considered. Remote monitoring and control offer many direct and indirect benefits for companies operating power plant fleet. Direct benefits include the possibility of optimising the plant's production, as well as making the comparison and benchmarking of individual plant easier. Indirectly remote technologies facilitate the data collection needed for preventative maintenance, ease the workload on reporting and enable a better control over the whole lifespan of the plant The aim of this study is to evaluate the benefits of remote technologies and estimate their financial effects. The demands imposed by these new technologies on the plant's operational processes are also scrutinised. Based on this study it can be stated that the future for remote technologies at power plants looks promising. Remote monitoring is the logical first step, through which companies can distribute the workload between numerous plants more easily and thus gain more flexibility. At the same time the plant's operational processes adjust to the new situation, which in turn slowly paves the way for remote control. Remote control will one day become reality within thermal power plants. This is due to the commonly acknowledged advantages, whose monetary value has been estimated in this study. Good experiences from hydro power and heating plants also work in remote control's favour. However, the breakthrough of remote control is not likely to happen in the near future. The main reason for this are the numerous technical problems (for instance those arising from the use of solid fuel) that currently remain unsolved. |
Abstract (fin): | Energia-ala on kokenut suuria muutoksia viimeisen kymmenen vuoden aikana. |
