Abstract: | The figures available give some idea of the distortion of patterns of consumption, spending, prices and European trade in the food sector in 1996 engendered by the BSE/beef crisis. The official announcement of a possible link between eating beef and contracting CJD was followed by official denials and media attention while government alternated between support for the cull and refusal to comply with EU moves. The markets for cigarettes, beer and spirits continued to be affected by the cross-Channel "personal import" trade in these goods which has flourished since borders were dismantled within the EU, as taxes on these items are much lower in France and Belgium than in the UK. |
