Abstract: | This study examines the labour market consequences borne by executives remaining at financially distressed firms relative to executives fleeing to another employer to avoid the stigma of failure. This study makes two contributions: 1. we document an ex-ante dimension of executive labour markets unaccounted for by ex-post settling up models. It is especially shown that executives who 'jump ship' - change employers in the two years prior to the failure - suffer fewer labour market consequences than their counterparts remaining with the failing firm. 2.it is extended the study of bankruptcy stigma to examine how stigma might be managed by jumping ship. |
