Abstract: | Japan's phenomenal economic success during the last few decades is attributed to its system of management which is blending human resource management with a fundamentally efficient production system. Some basic elements of Japanese management are considered: attitudes towards people, consensual decision making, lifelong employment. The sociological-cultural context of Japanese management is examined. The role of competence and loyalty is emphasized. Many drawbacks of the traditional cultural characteristics are described and analyzed: lack of freedom to take the initiative, long decision processes, conformity, unequal status of women etc. The changing attitudes of the younger generation and those of the unions are discussed. |
