Tiivistelmä:In the strategy literature the business segment performance has usually been considered in relation to industry and corporate effects. This research recognizes the multilevel and cross-classified nature of the data on the subject and shows how the results are not in harmony with the statistical method. With the help of multilevel analysis data from ‘operating segments’ during 1995-1999 was analyzed, and the results show that (a) business segment effects are twice as big as corporate effects regarding the performance of business segment, (b) industry effects explain nearly four times less variance in the performance of business segment than corporate effects, and (c) the effect of the segments on the performance is eight times greater than the effect of industry. It is argued, that multilevel analysis provides benefits over other statistical methods. Further, the method makes it possible to model the relationships between industry, corporation and segment, and this way widens the descriptive nature of explained variance.
