Tiivistelmä:There are strong incentives to disseminate academic knowledge, because it would be significant for companies that have licensed their inventions. Despite this fact, most of the knowledge generated by universities remains latent. The licensee can however access the latent knowledge by engaging the inventor during the development process. The hypothesis that the strategies which engage the inventor increase the likelihood of commercial success of the invention is examined in the article. Although this might seem apparent, the sample companies differ greatly regarding the degree to which they have engaged the inventor. However, the engagement of the inventor might seem a bit strange because of the norms of open science under which the labs of universities are expected to operate. 124 license agreements associated with MIT inventions are examined through regression analyses and the results support the hypotheses.
