Tiivistelmä:This paper examines accountability (henceforth as: acc-ty.) arrangements in the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and other organizations (here as: orgs.)setting standards for certification (as: cert-n.) and eco-labelling. Dealt with are two types of acc-ty. likely to be achievable and important to non-state standards orgs: control and responsiveness. FSC has established a model for other cert-n. schemes, particularly within the fisheries and forestry sectors. By creating the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), supporters of FSC exported the cert-n. model to the fisheries sector. Industry-led forest cert-n. schemes have come to mimic procedural accountability arrangements initially established by their competitor. It is argued that while cert-n. schemes could enhance control of corporate environmental and social performance, some of the industry-dominated schemes adopt popular and fashionable acc-ty. recipes etc.
