Tiivistelmä:Using population data on Norwegian birth cohorts from 1950 to 1969, this study examined the extent to which social origins have direct impact on people's earnings, over and above what is mediated by the educational attainment. It is also explored whether these effects have changed in the course of time. It is found that parents' education level has relatively weak negative effects on earnings. Yet, parents' earnings have a stronger and positive effect, being either stable or increasing somewhat over the cohorts. Moreover, results indicate that social origin effects are not mediated by choice of field of education.
