Tiivistelmä:This paper investigates organizational factors influencing the propensity of organizational leaders in evaluating a new strategic issue ambivalently. Based on data from a survey of 220 German Chief executive officers (CEOs) faced by the enlargement of the European Union (EU), it is found that company CEOs with a more ambidextrous strategic orientation and a moderate sense of organizational control over the environment are most likely to be ambivalent about the issue. The prevalence of interpretive ambivalence at the executive level is affirmed. Ways for organizations to promote or prevent ambivalence in strategic sensemaking are suggested.
