Tiivistelmä:The article analyses the phenomenon of ‘picking up the bill’, thus contributing to a revival of sociological interest in gift exchange. It describes a distinctive theoretical approach with the use of ethnomethodology. Repeating practices are described, where gifts are used to mutually manage social problems of acceptance, rather than to sanction insufficient contributions by benefactor and beneficiary alike. The study describes the social character of possibly the best gifts exchanged in modern societies, where people pay for the consumption of one another.
