Tiivistelmä:Relationships between the environmental and economic aspects of sustainability have been well specified, but the social sphere has had relatively little attention. This study aims to fill this gap by integrating corporate environmentalism more thoroughly with concepts of corporate sustainability. I draw specifically from neo-Habermasian critical environmental theory research and introduce three concepts together for closer empirical research: the public sphere, the communicative rationality, and discursive design aiming to capture whether critical and reflective organizational systems (CROS) among the selected sample of business participants are in fact advancing. Using content analysis on corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports, the study uncovers that some business organizations seem to be on the brink of developing a learning environment consistent with CROS thinking. The results also suggest that there is a transformative effect on citizenship, possibly resulting from the teaching and learning that is facilitated by voluntary CSR initiatives.
