Tiivistelmä:Research has recognized virtual communities as a valuable source of innovation. This article seeks to understand what makes some end-user communities more successfully create innovations than others. Specifically, we investigate how the attractiveness of innovations is affected by interaction quality between the community members. In addition, we discuss trust in benevolent behaviour and competition for reputation with their interaction effect, as they are possible antecedents of interaction quality. Drawing on data collected through a web survey, the innovation activities of 127 virtual end-user communities are studied within the fields of sports, car and motorbike tuning and model building. The results confirm interaction quality positively connected to the innovativeness of virtual communities. As regards the antecedents of interaction quality, trust appears to be a key prerequisite to co-operative behaviour among virtual community members. The level of competition, however, only affects interaction quality if members have a high level of trust among themselves. The results emphasize the need to create an environment facilitating interaction among the innovation community members. Moreover, community managers should ensure that a minimum level of trust exists within the community before encouraging competition.
