| Tiivistelmä: | This paper investigates the use of visitor codes as a technique in tourism management. A brief history of the development of ecotourism is provided as a context for the use of codes. A discussion of the nature and use of visitor codes in a number of "developed" and "developing" countries is provided. A critique of the use of codes is also given. The nature of the Arctic environment is investigated and a rationale for a visitor code given. A draft "Visitor Code for the Arctic" is suggested and this employs some ideas obtained from the World Wide Fund for Nature Arctic Programme Director. |
