| Tiivistelmä: | The Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS) permitted interstate branching for federally chartered savings and loan associations (SLAs) in 1992. This article examines the wealth effects of the decision. The results of event study of 38 SLAs and 88 commercial banks with respect to OTS interstate branching announcements show that large SLAs and commercial banks generally experienced significant positive wealth effects but little or no reaction was found for smaller depository institutions. Even though it seems that the Riegle-Neal Interstate Banking and Branching Efficiency Act of 1994 will tend to benefit mostly large institutions, the authors expect that it will not compromise the viability of smaller depository institutions. |
