| Tiivistelmä: | This article argues that universities in OECD countries are facing a situation where not only is the state finding itself unable to fund the higher education system it has created, but where the state's own educational priorities may be changing and higher education may have a lower priority than previously. The reduction of funding which these trends imply will impose even greater competitive pressures on universities. This article suggests that universities will need to place a higher priority on being responsive to their local and regional Communities' needs and on being useful to society in order to continue to commend public support. |
