Tiivistelmä:This article examines whether trade openness promotes multilateral environmental cooperation. The reader might wonder what one has to do with the other, but the liberal, functionalist and neo-functionalist schools of international relations (IR) have long since argued that openness to trade might foster cooperation and disperse confrontation in other policy areas. As concerns the substantive self-interest, the major argument is that states with substantial mutual trading links have more to lose in terms of welfare if these links become interrupted by violent conflict. Also, the exploitation of trading opportunities can serve as a substitute and alternative for acquiring natural resources and markets by force.
