Tiivistelmä: | An important dimension of sustainable consumption (henceforth as: s-cmpn.) is the purchasing of environmental-labelled (henceforth as: env- and here as: lbld.) goods. This paper utilizes a comparative framework to analyse the impact of organizational varieties of env.-labelling (here as: lblng.) and market supply characteristics on purchases of env.-lbld. goods in 18 European countries. Focusing on labels (as: lbls.) for organic food and ecological durables, the plurality of existing lbls. and also state involvement into lblng. are used as the central dimensions constituting the organizational varieties. Market structures (as: m-strs.) refer to the supply of lbld. goods and the dominant retailing channels making up the infrastructure for this s-cmpn. dimension. In addition, country differences in the organization of env.-lblng. and the m-strs. are outlined. Individual level data from a 2007 Eurobarometer survey on purchases of env.-lbld. goods is combined with organizational and market structural indicators to analyse the effect of the differences. It is found out that only the market supply and retailing structure uncover a robust effect on individual purchases of environmentally friendly lbld. goods. |
