Abstract (eng): The aim of this thesis was to find suitable ways to utilize a novel cationic micropolymer on different paper grades in order to achieve lower drainage times and higher solids content of the paper web.
The literature part of this thesis reviews the theories of water removal from the paper web and the means of improving it.
The interrelationship of drainage, retention and formation is also reviewed.
In the experimental part the use of the cationic micropolymer was compared against chemical systems already in use on specific paper machines and against potential competing systems.
The paper grades tested in this study were supercalendered (SC) paper, fine paper and fluting board made from old corrugated container (OCC) furnish.

The drainage ability and retention of the furnishes and different chemical systems were measured using Dynamic Drainage Analyzer (DDA) and Dynamic Drainage Jar (DDJ).
Sheets were manufactured and the dewatering was analysed in detail on Moving Belt Former (MBF).
From the sheets produced on MBF, beta formation, air permeability, thickness and grammage were measured.
A statistical analysis was also carried out on the results.

The cationic micropolymer seemed to have a good effect on the solids contents after wire and press sections on furnishes with higher fines content.
The advantages in drainage time improvement were obvious only with very high dosages of the cationic micropolymer.
To achieve high retention with this chemical, high dosages were needed as well.
When used together with a cationic polyacrylamide (C-PAM), the retention ability of a C-PAM and the solids content increasing ability of the cationic micropolymer were combined.

In comparison to polyvinyl amine (PV Am) systems the cationic micropolymer did not decrease drainage time as much but it resulted in higher solids content after pressing and better formation.
The cationic micropolymer is recommended to be used on furnishes that are rich in fines content such as SC and fluting board based on OCC.
Abstract (fin): Diplomityön tavoitteena oli löytää sopivia tapoja käyttää uudenlaista kationista mikropolymeeriä eri paperilajeilla lyhyemmän vedenpoistoajan ja korkeamman paperirainan kuiva-ainepitoisuuden saavuttamiseksi.

Kationinen mikropolymeeri lyhensi vedenpoistoaikaa vasta erittäin suurilla annoksilla.
