Abstract (eng): The use of wood pellets as a fuel in power plants has continuously increased especially in Europe to reduce CO2-emissions.
To fulfil the emission targets many coal-fired power plants have started co-firing of coal and wood pellets.
While wood pellets' percentage of whole fuel of a power plant being small are road vehicle transports often sufficient way of transport.
As this percentage grows are larger amounts of wood pellets needed.
Concurrently the need for road vehicle transports is increased.
Therefore the alternative ways of transport, such as ship cargo, should also be discussed.

In this thesis various alternatives to receive and handle wood and bio char pellets as ship cargo in Helsinki Energy Salmisaari power plants were researched.
The primary research methods were literature review and expert interviews.
In this case the pellets' co-firing percentage will be 40 percent.
It was noted that the best way for receiving pellets as ship cargo would be via Tammasaari fuel harbour and via Salmisaari underground coal storage's tunnel.

A model for technical implementation of a receipt and handling system for wood and bio char pellets at Tammasaari fuel harbour and in coal storage tunnel was created.
By information acquired from various significant industrial companies' approximations of the system's investment and operating costs were made.
These were reviewed for variety types of conveyor systems.
In this case it was noted that based on costs, road vehicle transports are always more feasible alternative when there's enough pellets available near enough of the power plant.
Abstract (fin): Puupellettien käyttö voimalaitosten polttoaineena on jatkuvasti lisääntynyt etenkin Euroopassa energiantuotannon hiilidioksidipäästöjen vähentämiseksi.

Tutkimus koskee tapausta, jossa kiinteän biopolttoaineen osuus kivihiilen seospoltossa on 40 prosenttia.
Selvitysten perusteella paras vaihtoehto laivarahtien vastaanottamiseen on voimalaitosalueen läheisen Tammasaaren polttoainesataman ja Salmisaaren maanalaisen kivihiilivaraston ajotunnelin kautta.

Työssä laadittiin lisäksi malli polttoainesatamaan ja ajotunneliin asennettavalle pellettien laivarahtien vastaanotto- ja käsittelyjärjestelmälle.
Eri teollisuusyrityksistä saatujen tietojen avulla tehtiin laskelmat järjestelmän likimääräisistä investointi- ja käyttökustannuksista erilaisilla kuljetinjärjestelmillä toteutettuna.
Lopuksi kustannuksia verrattiin kuorma-autokuljetusten likimääräisiin kustannuksiin.
Laskelmien perusteella kuorma-autokuljetukset olisivat teoriassa aina kannattavampi vaihtoehto silloin, kun pellettejä on saatavilla riittävän läheltä voimalaitosta.
