Abstract (eng): Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is an automatic identification technology that has high expectations for industrial applications.
Although the origins of this technology are from more than a half century ago, recent technological advancements have opened up new possibilities for RFID applications.
Increasingly smaller physical sizes and lower costs have made RFID a suitable technology for unique object identification.
This combined to its key features - wireless communication and automatic identification-enables many new solutions in numerous operational functions.

Although RFID has been used in several other industries, it is still a relatively new technology in the metal refining and construction.
One of the reasons is that traditionally the RFID technology has been too expensive and cumbersome to be used in mass production and large-scale operations.
Another reason is that the rough operational conditions of these industries are challenging for any sophisticated technology.
Also the near presence of metals and liquids cause disturbances to radio signals used in a RFID system.
However, recent technological developments seem to be able to overcome these challenges.
Therefore RFID is becoming a viable technology for many applications.

These resent developments have made the study of RFID applications increasingly relevant.
The purpose of this master's thesis is to study the RFID technology and its possible applications in the metal refining and construction industries.
Abstract (fin): Radiotaajuinen etätunnistus (RFID, Radio s (RFID, Radio Frequency Identification) on automaattinen tunnistusmenetelmä, josta on suuret odotukset teollisissa sovelluksissa.

Siksi RFID:stä on tulossa varteenotettava teknologia moniin sovelluksiin.
