Abstract (eng): | Projects have recently established a firm foothold in business operations. Drawing on a comprehensive review of four literature streams (project success, innovation, business performance and complex projects) and a case study of two firms and 11 projects (seven external delivery projects of case company Timber and four capital investment projects of case company Neste Oil, 48 interviews conducted in 2009-2011), this study discusses criteria for business performance in projects. The empirical analysis encompasses both evaluating the realization of criteria and identifying ways of action that aim at fulfilling different criteria. The study suggests a framework to analyze the business performance criteria in two dimensions: stakeholders in the supply chain (subcontractor, focal organization, customer) and different time-frames (efficiency, short-term impact, long-term impact). Based on the literature review and empirical analysis, the thesis suggests a list of criteria structured with the framework described above. In addition to the most commonly mentioned criteria (time-cost-quality/scope, safety, learning, stakeholder satisfaction), a great emphasis was put on the role of new technology development, new markets and strategic references as the projects introduced new application areas for existing technologies. Strategic references were underlined in the external delivery projects (case company Timber) since existing reference plants are essential for the investment decisions of the customers. In addition, customer satisfaction and partnerships with the customers were accentuated in external delivery projects. Notably, the successfulness of the projects was highly dependent on finding suitable subcontractors in both external delivery and capital investment projects. Consequently, criteria related to partnerships as well as learning and technology development of subcontractors were highlighted in the projects of both case companies. Customers and authorities pay increasing attention to environmental and societal issues. Hence, impact on society and impact on environment are remarkable business performance criteria even in terms of the brand and reputation of project delivery companies. Projects are also vehicles to implement change. Neste Oil's four case projects were a milestone in the realization of Neste Oil's renewable fuel strategy and three of Timber's case projects introduced a new delivery scope constituting an organizational renewal. The study contributes to existing understandings by integrating knowledge from four literature streams. The method to structure the criteria and the in-depth case study of two firms (one delivering external delivery projects and the other capital investment projects) provide with new perspectives to business performance. |
Abstract (fin): | Projektit ovat tulleet viime aikoina yhä suositummiksi liiketoiminnan organisoinnissa. Tämä tutkimus tarkastelee projektin suorituskyvyn kriteerejä kirjallisuustutkimuksen (neljä kirjallisuushaaraa: projektin menestys, innovaatio, business performance, kompleksiset projektit) sekä tapaustutkimuksen avulla. Tapaustutkimus käsittää kaksi yritystä (Timber, Neste Oil) ja niiden 11 projektia (Timber: seitsemän toimitusprojektia, Neste Oil: neljä investointiprojektia) arvioiden kriteerien toteutumista projekteissa sekä tunnistaen toimintatapoja, joilla pyritään erilaisten kriteerien toteutumiseen. Tutkimus esittää uudenlaisen viitekehyksen projektin suorituskyvyn analysoimiseen kahdessa dimensiossa: tuotantoketjun sidosryhmät (alihankkija, keskeinen organisaatio, asiakas) ja aikajänteet (tehokkuus, lyhyen aikajänteen vaikutus, pitkän aikajänteen vaikutus). Työssä ehdotetaan yhteensä 15 kriteerin joukkoa jäsennettynä ylläkuvatun viitekehyksen avulla. Yleisimpien kriteerien (aika-kustannukset-laatu/laajuus, turvallisuus, oppiminen, sidosryhmien tyytyväisyys) lisäksi uusien teknologioiden kehittäminen, uudet markkinat ja strategiset referenssit korostuivat projekteissa, koska ne sisälsivät olemassa olevien teknologioiden soveltamista uusissa konteksteissa. Strategisten referenssien merkitys korostui toimitusprojekteissa (Timber), koska asiakkaiden investointipäätös perustui usein olemassa olevaan referenssilaitokseen. |
