Abstract (eng): | The rise of the web 2.0 thinking and mashups, which mix together multiple data sources to create new innovative solutions, have increasingly encouraged companies and websites to open their APIs to outside developers. API management providers help companies in opening web service APIs by offering an easy to use solution for managing developer enrollment, subscription plans to different API functions, quota limitations, metering and other functions that help ensure the security and the availability of the API services. In addition, API providers can act a broker or a trusted third-party between several application developers and API providers, and form web service marketplaces, which may accelerate the adoption of fee based web services in the future. The purpose of this thesis is to study the business models and the success factors of API management services by analyzing three case companies (Mashery, 3Scale and Strikelron) systematically using the STOF framework. Each of the case companies will be analyzed for differences in the service proposition and technical implementation, organizational arrangements and finance, according to the STOF framework. In the end of the case analysis a summary of the findings is presented. The literature study of the thesis will analyze business drivers for increasing interaction and collaborations between companies, which helps to understand the underlying factors for the increased interest for providing open APIs. Topics that are covered include development of value-chains to value networks and ecosystems, open innovation and experimentation as a means for managing market uncertainty. In addition, a short glance will be made to the development of Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) as an evolutionary path to web services and open APIs today. |
Abstract (fin): | Web 2.0 ajattelun ja mashup sovelluksien suosion nousu on enenevässä määrin rohkaissut yrityksiä ja internet-palvelujen tarjoajia julkaisemaan palveluihinsa avoimia rajapintoja. API-hallintapalvelujen tarjoajat auttavat yrityksiä avaamaan rajapintoja palveluihinsa tarjoamalla helposti käyttöön otettavan ratkaisun kehittäjien kirjoittautumisen hallintaan, ohjelmistorajapinnan eri funktioiden tilaamiseen, käyttökiintiöiden valvontaan, käyttöstatistiikan mittaamiseen ja muihin toimintoihin, jotka auttavat varmistamaan ohjelmistorajapinnan palvelujen tietoturvan ja saatavuuden. Lisäksi API hallintapalvelujen tarjoajat voivat toimia välittäjinä tai luotettuina kolmansina osapuolina kehittäjien ja ohjelmistorajapintojen tarjoajien välissä, ja muodostaa näin markkinapaikkoja maksullisille verkkorajapinnoille, mikä voi tehostaa maksullisten ohjelmistorajapintojen käyttöön ottoa internetissä. Tämän työn tarkoituksena on analysoida API hallintapalvelujen liiketoimintamalleja ja menestystekijöitä tutkimalla systemaattisesti kolmea esimerkki yhtiötä (Mashery, 3Scale ja Stikelron) STOF-mallin avulla. STOF-mallin mukaisesti jokaista yhtiötä analysoidaan arvolupauksen, teknisen toteutuksen, organisaatio verkoston ja rahoitusjärjestelyjen osalta. Esimerkkitapausten analyysin jälkeen esitetään yhteenveto löydöksistä. Työn kirjallisuustutkimuksessa analysoidaan yritysten välistä vuorovaikutusta ja yhteistyötä lisääviä liiketoiminnallisia ajureita, mikä auttaa ymmärtämään alla olevia tekijöitä, jotka vaikuttavat lisääntyvään kiinnostukseen julkaista avoimia rajapintoja. Aihealueisiin, joita käydään läpi, kuuluvat arvoketju ajattelun kehittyminen arvoverkoiksi ja ekosysteemeiksi, markkinaepävarmuuden voittaminen kokeilun avulla. Lisäksi työssä tehdään lyhyt katsaus palvelu orientoituneiden arkkitehtuurien kehittymiseen nykyisiksi avointen rajapintojen palveluiksi. |
