Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): In the business environment of the 2lst century, success and survival in the manufacturing industry has become increasingly difficult to ensure.
Continuous changes in the market situation imply that organizations would need better adaptability and adopt a more proactive approach to their markets.
Additionally, subcontractors are facing more pressure from their customers to shorten their delivery times and make their production more effective.

The case company is a small entrepreneurial subcontractor which serves the Finnish automotive industry and other Finnish companies.
The results from the analytical part of the study show that the delivery performance of the case company is insufficient.
The controllability of its delivery performance and capacity usage are weak, but there is a lot of potential to improve it.
The case company should improve its performance; therefore, it would be able to survive in the challenging business world.
It should also strengthen its position towards its customers and obtain more significant companies to its customers.
By that way it could ensure its future and growth.
To reach the target and to obtain competitive advantage in its markets it should make its production concept clearer.

In this study, a new production model is developed for the case company.
The study consists of two parts: theoretical and empirical.
The theoretical part includes a survey which is made to study the evolution of production paradigms over the last decades.
Among these paradigms the Lean paradigm and the agile paradigm have been selected for observations, for instance, the role of subcontractors in the supply chain.
Particular attention is paid to the production control system of a subcontracting company.

The empirical part includes the production chain of the case company, which is divided into two separate parts.
In the downstream side of the production chain, there is a flow of parts that is not dedicated to any customer order, whereas the upstream part of the production chain produces parts directly to a customer order.
As a result of the study, there will be a new production model which is based on combining lean and agile paradigms.
The combination is called the hybrid model.
Lean methods are applied to the downstream side of the production chain and agile methods to the upstream side.
The concept of agility is also applied to improve the ability of the case company to respond to changes in its business environment and to take advantage of them.
Abstract (fin): 2000-luvun markkinaympäristössä tuotannollisessa toiminnassa selviytymisestä ja menestymisestä on tullut yhä vaikeampaa.
Jatkuvat muutokset markkinatilanteessa vaativat organisaatioilta yhä enemmän sopeutumiskykyä ja ennakoivaa lähestymistapaa.
Myös alihankintayritykset kohtaavat asiakkaidensa taholta jatkuvasti kovenevia vaatimuksia lyhyemmistä toimitusajoista ja tehokkaammasta tuotannosta.
Tutkimuksen kohteena oleva yritys on pieni, yrittäjävetoinen alihankintakonepaja, joka palvelee ajoneuvoteollisuutta ja muita kotimaisia asiakkaita.

Tutkimuksen analyysiosassa todetaan kohdeyrityksen toimituskyvyn ja kapasiteetin ohjattavuudessa ongelmia ja kehityspotentiaalia.
Sen olisi pystyttävä parantamaan suorituskykyään, jotta se voisi selviytyä yhä kovenevassa kilpailutilanteessa.
Sen pitäisi myös pystyä lujittamaan asemaansa suhteessa päähankkijoihinsa ja saavuttaa uusia merkittäviä asiakkuuksia toimintansa turvaamiseksi ja kehityksensä varmistamiseksi.
Tavoitteen saavuttamiseksi sen tulisi selkiyttää toimintamalliaan ja pyrkiä sen avulla saavuttamaan kilpailuetua markkinoilla.

Tässä työssä kehitetään kohdeyritykselle uusi toimintamalli.
Tutkimus jakaantuu teoreettiseen ja empiiriseen osaan.
Teoriaosassa tarkastellaan tuotannollisten toimintamallien kehittymistä vuosikymmenien aikana.
Toimintamalleista valitaan erityistarkastelun kohteeksi kevyt lean-toimintamalli ja ketterä agile-toimintamalli.
Lisäksi teoriaosassa tarkastellaan alihankintayritystä toimitusketjun osana ja alihankintayrityksen tuotannonohjausta.

Työn empiirisessä osassa kohdeyrityksen tuotantoketju jaetaan kahteen osaan.
Tuotannon ylävirran puoleinen osa tarkoittaa tuotantoketjun sitä osaa, jota pitkin kulkiessaan valmistettavalle tuotteelle ei kohdistu aktiivista asiakastilausta.
Tuotannon alavirran puoleinen osa tarkoittaa puolestaan sitä tuotantoketjun osaa, jota pitkin kulkiessaan tuotetta ollaan valmistamassa suoraan asiakastilaukselle.
Lopputuloksena syntyy kevyen lean-toimintamallin ja ketterän agile-toimintamallin yhdistävän hybridin toimintamallin mukainen toimintamalli.
Kevyeen lean-toimintamalliin liittyviä periaatteita sovelletaan tuotannon ylävirran puoleiseen osaan ja ketterän agile-toimintamallin mukaisia periaatteita tuotannon alavirran puoleiseen osaan.
Ketterän toimintamallin avulla pyritään lisäksi parantamaan kohdeyrityksen kykyä vastata liiketoimintaympäristönsä muutoksiin ja kykyä hyödyntää ne mahdollisuuksina.
