Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): The focus of this paper is on how champions in the built environment form and manage innovation networks what the preconditions are and what elements are present during the early stages of the innovation process The sector of the built environment is facing enormous challenges regarding sustainability and obligations to meet energy efficiency standards; there is a rush to innovate.
Innovations have been slow in taking off in the industry that may be characterized by complex value networks, little inter-organizational collaboration and inadequate innovation management.
Nevertheless, it does appear that companies that are able to maintain close relationships with their customers and other interest groups and manage their networks are likely to have higher innovation success.
In order for both innovation and networks to be successful in the built environment champions playa necessary role.

This study consists of a literature review on innovation, champions and network: management in the built environment.
Based on literature a framework is constructed and then tested in semi-structured interviews.
Interviews were carried in two rounds, first with specialists of innovation networks in different industries and then with champions from the built environment.
Champion interviews are presented as case studies on innovation in built environment networks.

The main findings of the study indicate that network formation and the beginning stages innovation network in the built environment are extremely sensitive, yet crucial.
The significance of champions is fundamental of forming innovation networks, inspiring and leading collaborators and narrating the vision, aligning different goals, building a basis for trust through meetings, IPR procedures and clear goals.
The beginning is time consuming but time is a valuable investment in the early stages.
There are two types of goals in innovation networks: one regarding the product and the other regarding collaboration and the network.
The champion of the beginning is an inspirational leader but as goals are established and product development begins, the role of the champion shifts to more structure, project planning and management.
The champion switch poses potential risk for the innovation network; therefore it should be planned carefully.
Abstract (fin): Tämä diplomityö tutkii rakennetun ympäristön avainhenkilöitä, championeita, jotka muodostavat ja johtava innovaatioverkostoja.
Rakennusalalla on kiire innovoida, sillä. se on globaalisti suuri saastuttaja.
On pikaisesti alettava kehittää kestävän kehityksen teknologioita ja toimintamalleja, sillä innovaatioita ei ole syntynyt riittävällä tehokkuudella.
Alaa leimaa vähäinen organisaatioiden välinen yhteistyö, kompleksiset arvoverkot sekä riittämätön innovaatiojohtamisen ymmärrys.
Kuitenkin verkottuneet toimijat, jotka hallitseva verkostonsa, ovat innovatiivisempia ja menestyvämpiä.
Sekä verkostojohtamisen että innovaatiojohtamiset menestystekijät liittyvät keskeisesti ihmisiin, avainhenkilöihin, joita tässä työssä kutsutaan "championeiksi".

Tutkimus koostuu kirjallisuuskatsauksesta, jossa käsitellään innovaatioita, championeita sekä verkostojohtamista rakennetussa ympäristössä.
Empiirisessä osuudessa kirjallisuuskatsauksen viitekehyksiä testataan puolistrukturoitujen haastatteluiden ja kahden case-tutkimuksen avulla.
Haastattelut toteutettiin kahdessa osassa: ensimmäiset eri toimialojen innovaatioverkostoasiantuntijoille ja toiset rakennetun ympäristön valikoiduille championeille.
Champion-haastattelut käsitellään case-tutkimuksina.

Tutkimuksen päälöydökset osoittavat, että innovaatioverkoston muodostaminen ja varhaiset vaiheet rakennetussa ympäristössä ovat haavoittuvaista, ja kriittistä aikaa.
Championit ovat keskeisiä verkostojen luomisessa, he inspiroivat ja johtavat verkoston asiantuntijoita, selkeyttävät vision yhteisiksi tavoitteiksi luovat pohjan yhteiselle luottamukselle sekä varmistavat sopimustekniset asiat.
Verkoston ensivaiheet ovat aikaavieviä, mutta huolellinen panostus alkuun on arvokasta jatkoyhteistyön kannalta.
Innovaatioverkostoilla on kahdenlaisia tavoitteita: tavoite innovaation tai tuotekehityksen suhteen, sekä verkostoyhteistyön tavoite.
Varhaisen vaiheen ja verkoston muodostamisen champion on usein visionääri, mutta tavoitteiden kirkastuessa johtamisen painopiste siirtyy kohti strukturoidumpaa projektijohtamista.
Koska henkilö championin roolissa saattaa vaihtua, on tarpeen kiinnittää erityistä huomiota roolivaihdosten liitoskohtiin. sillä johtajan vaihtuessa koko verkoston johtaminen saattaa vaarantua.
