Abstract (eng): | European Union has set a goal to increase the share of renewable energy sources in energy use, decrease the amount of greenhouse gases and increase the energy efficiency. Reasons for these goals are the diminishing fossil fuel resources and climate change which is thought to be accelerated by greenhouse gases that are emitted from burning fossil fuels (and other fuels as well). This thesis studies the energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions that are emitted during the bio-synthetic natural gas (bio-SNG) production chain. Bio-SNG is produced by gasifying forest biomass and refining the product gas to be similar to natural gas. This makes it possible to utilize the existing natural gas transmission infrastructure. The studied production chain consists of harvesting, transporting and pre-handling of forest biomass, bio-SNG production in a bio refinery, transportation of bio-SNG via pipeline and end-use. The studied end-use applications are transport biofuel, heating and CHP-production. Production chain is studied by means of mass and energy balances. Greenhouse gas emissions are calculated according to principles presented by EU in the Renewable Energy Sources directive. Results were compared to the fossil reference fuel (diesel) and also to natural gas. Greenhouse gas emissions from heating and CHP-production are compared to emissions from fossil reference fuel that is defined by European Commission in sustainability requirements for the use of solid and gaseous biomass sources in electricity and heating. Due to the debate wallowing over indirect C02emissions of forest bioenergy, both, net and gross greenhouse gas emissions are calculated. Bio-SNG fulfils clearly the sustainability criteria of greenhouse gas reductions set by the EU. As transport biofuel the greenhouse gas reduction is 93 % compared to diesel and 91 % compared to natural gas. In heating and CHP-production the greenhouse gas reductions are about 98 % compared to fossil reference fuel. For the sake of comparison palm-oil based biodiesel reduces greenhouse gas emissions only about 60 %. If the indirect C02 emissions are taken into account for, the greenhouse gas emissions of Bio-SNG as transport biofuel are similar to the emissions from the use of natural gas, but smaller than the emissions from the use of diesel. From the different end-use alternatives, heating has the best energy efficiency. Production chain efficiency for heating is 91 %. |
Abstract (fin): | Euroopan unioni on asettanut tavoitteekseen lisätä uusiutuvien energialähteiden osuutta energiankäytössä, vähentää kasvihuonekaasupäästöjä ja parantaa energiatehokkuutta. Loppukäyttövaihtoehdoista lämmityskäytöllä on paras energiatehokkuus. Sen ketjuhyötysuhde on 91 %. |
