Abstract (eng): | The two goals of this thesis are: to analyse the differences in building information modelling (BIM) between house and infra construction, and to find designing software and modelling methods suitable for modelling underground rock caverns and tunnels. The research consists of three subjects: solutions in information technology and the development of them, the current state and readiness of the infra construction industry regarding construction methods based on BIM, and which for rock caverns typical shapes of surfaces can be modelled with the road designing software. In this case BIM is defined as three dimensional modelling of building products during their whole life cycle. The infra construction industry and its quarters in Finland have agreed on migrating to BIM based construction by the year 2014. The financer (Sito Oy) of this thesis is aware of that the rock engineering industry in Finland has been dragging behind when it comes to BIM. Sito is by the research done in this thesis aiming to be able to rise up to the BIM related expectations that inevitably will be set by clients. As part of the thesis the rock caverns of the Tapiolan Keskuspysäköinti project were modelled. The shapes and surfaces that were successfully and with adequate precision modelled include: symmetrical and asymmetrical tunnel cross sections, the gradual and total change of cross sections along an alignment, natural bedrock surface. corner chamfers. shafts. and recesses (dog holes). The in the modelling process used surface modelling method (TIN) restricts how and how accurately they can be modelled. BIM based construction will also be implemented in the infra construction industry and therefore also in the rock engineering industry. Rock caverns can efficiently with precision and in an intelligent manor be modelled with highway design software. The greatest hindrance to BIM based construction in rock engineering is the lack of quality standards. guidelines or specifications, since clients are only able to commission BIM based construction when this type of documents is available. |
