Abstract: | This study examines specific resource combinations (henceforth as: res-cmbs.) along the value chain, focusing on two mechanisms that are central to res-cmbs. for innovation in the pharmaceutical industry: 1) recruitment and retention of star scientists, and 2) engagement in strategic alliances. It is argued that res-cmbs. focusing on the same parts of the value chain are substitutes due to knowledge redundancies. In contrast, it is hypothesized that res-cmbs. linking different parts of the value chain are complements due to integration of non-redundant knowledge. In order to test the hypotheses, the innovative performance of more than 100 global pharmaceutical firms during three decades from 1974 to 2003 is empirically tracked. |
