Abstract:Start-up businesses started and supported by unemployed people is becoming an increasingly popular phenomenon in Europe and it is supported by various governmental programs. Due to very little available data, empirical evidence on skill-composition, direct job creation and other key variables is very rare, so this article bases its analysis on unique survey data with a sample size of over 3,100 start-ups founded in Germany by unemployed people. The results for two groups are compared, the bridging allowance group and the start-up-subsidy group.
