Abstract:This study examines the similarities and differences btw. U.S. and international franchises in the amount of control by their U.S. franchisors (here as: frnsrs.) and the degree of autonomy (as: atmy.) accorded to franchisees (as: frnss). Based on in-depth interviews with frnsrs. representatives and frnss. from Domino's, McDonald's, Papa John's, and Subway, exploratory research is conducted to compare and contrast the frnsrs.-frnss. relationship in the fast food industry btw. the USA and Iceland, Ireland, the U.K., Belgium, and the Netherlands. The interviews suggest that international frnss. tend to have more atmy. than their U.S. counterparts, especially in decisions on local market adaptation and in situations with experiences of strong performance or as master frnss. On the other hand, experienced international frnss. are less likely to demand atmy., while experienced U.S. frnss. seek more atmy. Interestingly, international frnsrs. and frnss. under hardship tend to seek collaboration rather than compete for control or autonomy.
