Abstract: | In this study the authors show the reasons why contextual approach to leadership is important to company performance. The paper is based on two samples of startups and new ventures. The aim of this paper is examine relationship between top management team heterogeneity, leadership behavior and environmental dynamism of business. In rapidly changing industry environment startups with heterogeneous top management teams performed best when led by directive managers and homogenous teams succeed best when led by empowering leaders. In stabile industry environments the management behavior that suits best was reversed. Both internal and external factors affect selecting of proper management behavior for firms. |
