| Abstract: | In this paper, the experiences of the South African automotive industry are relayed based on its attempts to implement the ISO 14001 standard. Through a questionnaire-based survey, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and also larger companies were asked about the key motivations on environmental change, its benefits and the barriers. Herein, the variation in adoption rates are analysed to find different relationships btw. them. There are found out substantial differences and some similarities as to the benefits, barriers and motivations behind the environmental management systems (EMSs) implementation that are hidden behind corporate rhetoric and commitment to sustainability etc. |
