Abstract:Using an evolutionary perspective of the resource-based view, this study aims at understanding how changes in a partner firm's overall strategy may influence the firm's interfirm partnerships (hereafter as: p-ship/s) over time. Changes in a partner firm's overall resource deployment strategy (herein as: r-d-s.) and partnering strategy (as: p-s.) are argued to influence the value and uniqueness of p-ship/s resources. These changes alter the competitive advantage associated with p-ship/s resources, affecting the propensity of p-ship/s termination. Using an event history analysis with 150 joint ventures from 1990 to 2001, p-ship/s termination within a longitudinal dataset is examined. With initial p-ship/s conditions controlled for, the results indicate significant influences of various changes in partner firm's overall r-d-s. and p-s. on the propensity of termination.
