Abstract:A heterogeneous panel-based Bayesian model averaging approach is used to observe the robust economic and policy drivers of international migration to the UK from various source regions over 1980-2007. Roughly three-quarters of the increase in last decade's net immigration, which is especially pronounced for selected source regions, is linked with structural change, which could be attributed to UK and foreign immigration policy. The remaining share of the rise is largely explained by 'friends and family' effects. There are substantial uncertainties associated both with the effects of certain economic drivers of immigration and with immigration forecasts.
