Abstract:In this study, the gender diversity of sample of Spanish small and medium enterprises (SMEs) is examined. It is found that if there are women's on boards it has a negative impact on company performance. This finding may be due to less risky strategies preferred by women directors. It is also found that family firms and firms with a financial institution as the main shareholder usually have more women on the board. Finally, it is indicated that companies with less debt, more assets, and larger boards have more women as directors.
