Abstract:Based on an expanded view of leadership and the moral reasoning framework by Lawrence Kohlberg (1981), this study examines the moral reasoning of the chief executive officers of the world's 11 largest automobile manufacturers. Using the CEOs’ letter to their stakeholders in the social responsibility reports released by the organizations, the CEOs’ moral reasoning is compared to other managers’ moral reasoning, and the one exhibited within the CEO group is analyzed for differences resulting from regional location. Contradicting with conventional understanding based on prior research, the CEOs in the sample did not pursue moral reasoning at a higher level as managers but there were differences within the sample of CEOs in nationality level. Implications of the results for CEOs, managers, academics, and others are discussed.
