Abstract:This article examines how different social capital formation processes affect to member identification, with a focus on virtual organizations where diverged membership may prevent face-to-face interactions. The findings indicate how some dimensions of social capital increase each other and influence identification through the four conditions that affect social capital development: time, interdependence, interaction and closure. It is proposed that not all members of the organization need to feel equally connected. Partial closure seems beneficial for information flows and "renewal" of the virtual organization.
