Abstract:To date, the majority of analysis on the historic development of tourism has concentrated on observing its evolution through a single Life Cycle identified with the mass tourism development. However, many major destinations have a much longer history, seeming to have passed through the consecutive Life Cycles related to various stages. Research demonstrates the value of the Tourism Area Life Cycle in combination with Regulation theory when analyzing the long-term historical tourism development. We show the case of Catalonia, one of the main European tourist destinations. The article shows how combining these theories can be especially practical for developing a global model that groups tourism development by phases with its paradigmatic changes.
