Abstract:A popular view among researchers and managers is that external knowledge can be of great help in new product development (NPD) and sustaining a company's competitiveness. Still, it is a mystery why some companies embrace external knowledge sources for NPD, while others use it much more sparingly. This article analyzes the effect of the innovation culture of a company on its openness to external knowledge with the use of Kitchell's innovation adaptation model. The research model is tested on a sample of 254 technology-based companies across several industries.
