Abstract:This paper aims at analysing how formal, horizontal knowledge (hereafter as: h-k.) communities (as: commts.) contribute to knowledge application (KA). In general, complex organizations' employees face multiple roles, being possibly conflicting and competing for their time. It is herein sough to examine how the quality of management of the commts., the attitudes of line managers, and the employees' motivation for taking part in the commts. ease KA.
Based on a survey in an organization with many specialized, h-k. commts., a total of over 2,500 responses were gathered from members of about 130 different commts. It is found that i. community management, line support and intrinsic motivation have a positive impact on KA, and ii. the effect of line support is stronger when employees are intrinsically motivated etc.
