Abstract:This study shows that goal programming (GP) provides an alternative, flexible approach to model combination. GP offers planners a practical solution to tourism forecasting problems, as the method is more adaptable than conventional minimization of prediction error, by permitting practitioners to prioritise a series of management related goals. Forecasters can focus on longer- and short-term goals etc.
The data of this study are quarterly (seasonally unadjusted) U.K. outbound tourism numbers by air to the 18 most popular destinations in Europe in 2006. These data are gathered by the U.K. International Passenger Survey (IPS), published by the U.K. Office for National Statistics (ONS).
