Tiivistelmä (eng): This diploma work concerns the reuse of a French castle situated in South-eastern Normandy, 90km away from Paris into a seminar centre.
The Chateau de Lorey had been until the middle of the 20th century a secondary residence for wealthy Parisians.

Its grounds stretch over the Eure River and accommodate diverse buildings with various styles, which are the former outbuildings of the castle gate house, barn, orangery, private chapel, follies, dog and hen houses.
The history of the site reveals two successive shapes following the French politics and societies before and after the Revolution of 1789.
Uninhabited since the 1950s, the site has gradually receded.
Fortunately however most of the buildings only presenting light damages mainly due to high moisture.
Only the main house west wing had collapsed around twenty years ago.
The reasons of the desertion since the 1950's are complex.
Since the 20th century, the unprecedented technical progress and evolution has had important repercussions on society and lifestyles.
In this specific context, chateau compounds have suffered from abandonment since their spatial organization no longer serviced the needs of modern families, as local farming production became obsolete.

The first problematic of the project is the definition and injection of a new function to the site that supports the envelop remnants and the needs of modern day.
The second problematic emerges from the physical condition of the main house.
The building's partial collapse is proposed to be restored to aesthetic and structural balance.

In the aim of answering those problematic, it has been important to understand the buildings; firstly with a study of the history, in particular the evolution of the site and original functions, and then by a survey of what is currently found on site.
An analysis of the various spaces and how they relate to each other will further determine the reuse possibility of the buildings.
Methods of construction, materials and damages are investigated in the aim of evaluating the restoration and reuse work.
Finally a study of the values of the site and the surroundings has been carried out in order to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the site and helping to define its new functions.

This study leads to the definition of a new program, a seminar centre with working spaces, restaurant and accommodation, and to the conception of a new building, the hotel, which participate to the aesthetical recovery balance of the main house.
