| Tiivistelmä (eng): | In the fall of 2009, The Swedish School of Social Science (known as Soc & Kom) was relocated and its former facilities on Topeliusgatan 16 have since been without occupation. Due to this, the building is now threatened by demolishment. This thesis is a reaction to this threat and proposes a plan for the buildings development in order to ensure its future. The building on Topeliusgatan 16 - originally designed to inhabit Soc & Kom - was built in 1964. In 1989 it was provided with an extension. Both parts of the building were planned by the same architect - Erik Kråkström. The older part of the building exemplifies the late modernistic and rationalistic architecture of the 1960s, while its extension from the late 1980's is of a more anonymous and humble character. The older part of the building is significant through its architectural qualities, prompting a need to reconsider its demolishment. This thesis presents a plan for the development of the facilities. The intension is to ensure the building's future by assigning it a potential new function, as well as, recognizing and preserving its architectural qualities. By reference to factual needs this plan proposes the building to be renovated and used as an activation center for the Senior Citizens of Helsinki, while, the buildings 1989 extension has been replaced by a housing complex for elderly people. This thesis consists of three parts. The first part is a historical inventory of the building, as well as an analysis of its qualities. The second part examines the related context. The final part is a presentation of the development plan itself. |
| Tiivistelmä (swe): | Skolhuset på Topeliusgatan 16 som inhyst Svenska social- och kommunalhögskolan (Soc & kom) i nästan 50 år har en osäker framtid sedan institutionen flyttat till nya fastigheter. Eftersom en ny hyresgäst inte funnits har byggnaden stått under rivningshot. Detta diplomarbete är en reaktion på skolhusets rivningsplaner. Med avsikt att trygga dess framtid erbjuder den en utvecklingsplan för fastigheten. Skolhuset som byggdes avsiktligt för Soc & kom färdigställdes är 1964. Är 1989 försågs den med en tillbyggnad. Byggnadens båda delar är planerade av arkitekt Erik Kråkström. Den äldre byggnadsdelen som representerar 60- tals modernisms rationella arkitektur besitter i byggnadskonstnärligt avseende värdefulla egenskaper. Tillbyggandens arkitektur har en vardagligare prägel. Med hänvisning till den äldre byggnadsdelens kvaliteter bör byggnadens rivningsplaner omprövas. Utgångspunkten för denna utvecklingsplan har varit att tillvisa byggnaden en ny användning med vilken dess framtid kan tryggas och dess arkitektur värdesättas. Med grund i reell efterfrågan utgår planen ifrån att byggnaden kunde renoveras och i framtiden användas för seniorverksamhet ämnat i första hand för Helsingfors seniorbefolkning. Med hänvisning till byggnadens kvalitativa egenskaper samt den i utvecklingsplanen tillvisade användningen, har skolhusets senare byggnadsdel gett plats ät en nybyggnation ämnat för seniorbostäder. Detta diplomarbete består av tre delar. Den första delen behandlar fastighetens byggnadshistoria och innefattar även en analys av byggnadens egenskaper. Den andra delen behandlar sammanhanget på en mer kontextuell nivå. Den sista delen är en redogörelse över utvecklingsplanen. |
