Abstract:To examine the antecedents of organisational commitment, and to consider the impact of human resource practices on organisational commitment, four high technology subsidiaries of US multinationals were chosen. The results of multiple regression analysis has shown that the link between organisational commitment and human resource practices is at best inconclusive. So, a proponent of human resource management could argue that HR practices indirectly influence organisational commitment while a critic of personnel management might argue that no direct links exist between organisational commitment and HR practices and that consequently little investment in HR practices should take place by organisations. More detailed research is needed to resolve this debate.
