Abstract:The reports updates a review of the fresh fish published in March 1988. Supplies of sea fish are split fairly evenly between UK landings and imports. UK landings of demersal and pelagic fish by UK registered vessels fell from 525,195 tons in 1990 to 488,878 tons in 1991. Household expenditure on fresh fish rose from 437m of pounds sterling in 1990 to 437m of pounds sterling in 1991. Over the last five years fresh fat fish has been the fastest growing sector of the fish market in value terms. Detailed statistics on landings, size of the UK fishing fleet, imports and exports of fresh, chilled and frozen sea fish, household consumption and expenditures on fish, demographic analysis of purchasers of fish and advertising expenditures are presented.
