Abstract:The role and behaviour of the German central bank, the Bundesbank as the quardian of the value of the German currency, the DEM, is investigated. The Bundesbank is often criticized for ingignantly rejecting any criticism and behaving as if it could alone decide the fate of the DEM. This position is unacceptable today, since several national and international forces have impacts on the value of the currency. These economic and political forces and the ways they influence the value of the DEM are examined as well as the efforts of the German central bank to defend the DEM against external impacts.
