| Abstract: | Sustainability has come to mean many things to many people and there are a lot of unanswered questions relating to sustainability. The article investigates the notion of sustainable development and argues that the role of energy in pursuit of policies seeking sustainable development is crucial. Correspondingly, the work of energy economists will be affected in many traditional areas of analysis and require enhanced scope and new expertise. This would lead to a better understanding of the place of natural resources in the production process, better delineation of trade offs between avoidance of ecological degradation and economic stagnation, and more interdisciplinary feedback. |
